Handknit with Love

Every leaf and bauble on the Skye, Lyon, and Rive Cardigan, as well as the platted cable designs encasing the Beech Cardigan and Olympus Sweater, are all details handwoven by women artisans– giving each style a unique story of tenderness and hand-touched artistry. Each sweater provides the softest refuge from the biting chill while telling a story of loving craftsmanship, as they are all hand knitted in 100% baby alpaca using traditional Peruvian techniques by a collective of women in Lima.Once or twice a week, this community of women convenes to share their hand knitting projects, oftentimes using their meeting as an opportunity to knit together. Between gatherings, these artisans– many of whom are mothers– craft our coziest knitted styles from home, where they can care for their families without the added obstacle of traveling to earn their income. As a company grounded in the mission of making lasting, beautiful collections while supporting women throughout our supply chain, we are proud to partner with a cooperative that understands the importance of setting one’s own schedule and workload, without affecting their earnings. These cozy sweater styles are made with care using the softest, 100% baby alpaca. The alpaca fiber comes from Peruvian alpacas, which are tended to by a long lineage of breeders who treat the alpaca as family members. With heritage methods permeating both in the materials and production– coupled with the special attention to nurturing an environment of hand-touched care– each sweater is a loving example of what responsible practices can create. In June of 2021, our very own VP of Product, Anne Marecki, had the opportunity to virtually sit down with the knitters creating these heirloom pieces to talk about the Fair Trade certification and speak to why participation in this program is important to our mission as a brand. The program commits to ensuring workers’ rights – including fair wages, safe working conditions, and more – and are fundamental to our own commitment to responsible production. As the certification creates extra training and implementations on the production side to ensure compliance, Anne created an open space to walk through the principles of Promperú Fair Trade, our company’s outlined goals, and to answer questions from the artisans responsible for crafting the garments at these standards.
